ESSENTIAL QUESTION: What was the most significant cause of World War I?
I chose the political cartoon "Chain of Friendship" as my artifact to help explain my response to the essential question.
What is it? a political cartoon displaying the conflict that the alliances of WWI created. It was published in the American newspaper the Brooklyn Eagle in July 1914. The caption reads: "If Austria attacks Serbia, Russia will fall upon Austria, Germany upon Russia, and France and England upon Germany."
Why this political cartoon? I think this particular political cartoon has a great of simply showing in a physical form what really caused World War I. It displays that alliances were the most significant cause of World War I, as I describe in my opinion piece, in a way that most people are able to understand. By looking at this cartoon, it is easily understood that World War I really started because of all the threats that were made to protect members of alliances. These threats started a chain reaction and got several other countries involved.
